OCHIN Applauds Reauthorization of PCORI Funding

When patients and those who care for them have better information, they make better decisions. Outcomes improve and communities are healthier. That’s always been our focus, and we’re pleased to see that Congress endorsed that point of view recently, reauthorizing funding for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).

PCORI-funded research helps patients weigh their options and make choices based on their values, preferences, and circumstances. OCHIN has partnered with PCORI for the past seven years.

Our research, driven by members and their patients’ needs, focuses on improving outcomes for populations that have been historically underserved, so that there is no back seat in American health care. Funding from PCORI and other sources is critical to our mission. PCORI and its programs are the most reliable source of funds to ensure that studies comparing the best care approaches for clinically and socially complex patients continue.

“It is all too common for the populations we serve to be left out of research, as they often face more complications and higher costs of care,” said Jennifer Stoll, EVP of OCHIN. “Our long partnership with PCORI helps us address that.”

For example, the OCHIN-led ADVANCE Collaborative is funded through PCORI’s National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network (PCORnet) and leverages the power of health data and patient partnerships to increase the speed of clinical research. OCHIN is one of nine PCORnet organizations nationwide and the only network focused on bringing together patients, providers and researchers dedicated to safety-net populations.

Congress reauthorized the funding in December 2019, passing the “Extension of Appropriations to the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Trust Fund” to extend PCORI funding until 2029. OCHIN joined more than 200 institutions, including many distinguished peer-researchers, in calling on Congress to reauthorize these critical funds.
