Dr. Anna Steeves-Reece is a research investigator at OCHIN. She is a health services researcher with training in public health, medical anthropology, and Latin American studies. Her work has focused on structural and social drivers of health, social and medical integration, health equity, maternal and child health, and rural health.
Anna uses qualitative methods to ensure that patient and clinician perspectives inform meaningful recommendations for health care improvement. Additionally, she leverages mixed and multiple methods study designs to examine research topics from complementary vantage points.
In her role as an OCHIN investigator, Anna has concentrated on the improvement and evaluation of community-engaged research methods. She serves as a member of OCHIN’s Social Policy Evaluation Program, Qualitative Science Core, and Community-Engaged Research Program and Core.
Social needs screening and referral interventions For her doctoral research, Anna was funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (1R36HS027707-01) to conduct three studies on patient experiences, decisions, and recommendations regarding social needs screening and referral interventions. First, she completed a systematic mixed studies review, which synthesized patient-reported barriers and facilitators to accessing resources to address social needs. Her review also resulted in a taxonomy of quantitative resource connection measures to support the evaluation of health care-based social needs interventions. Next, through a cross-sectional study using data from the Accountable Health Communities (AHC) Model—a social needs intervention created by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services—in Oregon, Anna found that the type of screening mode (in-person; remote) may not adversely affect patients’ willingness to accept health care-based navigation for social needs. Finally, Anna completed qualitative research with Oregon patients who participated in the AHC Model and used findings to create a framework for generating positive patient experiences during phone-based social needs interventions. All these studies generated critical evidence for the development and refinement of effective social needs screening and referral interventions.
