Dr. Kurt C. Stange is an affiliate investigator at OCHIN and a family and public health physician. At Case Western Reserve University, he is a member of the Center for Community Health Integration (CHI Center), which conducts collaborative research and development for community health and integrated, personalized care. He is a distinguished university professor; the Dorothy Jones Weatherhead professor of medicine; and professor of family medicine and community health, population and quantitative health sciences, oncology, and sociology. He is an American Cancer Society clinical research professor and served as founding editor for the Annals of Family Medicine. He serves as co-director for the Larry A. Green Center for Advancing Primary Health Care for the Public Good and is a scholar at the Nova Institute.
At OCHIN, he is also a principal investigator on two NIH-funded projects that aim to understand how practice changes since the pandemic are affecting the primary care workforce and the quality and equity of care for patients and for people living with multiple chronic conditions. He is interested in how the generalist function and the personal physician make a difference in people’s lives, and he is active in multimethod, participatory research and development that aims to understand and improve the generalist function, primary health care, health equity, and community and population health. He is a member of the Academy of Medicine of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
Residencies
Beginning with the landmark Direct Observation of Primary Care Study, Kurt has engaged in highly collaborative transdisciplinary research to understand and improve primary care and the generalist function in health care. This work has developed and used participatory mixed methods and implementation science approaches to advance understanding and pragmatic approaches to integrating, personalizing, and prioritizing care and advancing health and equity for whole people, families, and communities.
