A new OCHIN network analysis revealed that the Builder programs offered by OCHIN to help members optimize their use of OCHIN Epic are effective in improving team efficiency, enhancing peace of mind, and reducing burnout to boost provider satisfaction.
The OCHIN Builder programs are designed to help users get the most out of their electronic health record (EHR). By training members in advanced Epic configuration skills and matching these EHR champions with support analysts who help them take control of clinical tools at the member level, builders can develop in-house solutions to unique challenges that may not be addressed by network-wide EHR functionality. The programs, developed in 2016, then enable OCHIN to scale the solutions across the wider network for other members who may face similar challenges.
“OCHIN members care for some of our nation’s most medically complex patients, and that complexity can create unique workflow challenges and the need for EHR content that is specific to individual members’ circumstances,” said Jeff Richter, director of clinical programs and clinician engagement at OCHIN. “By providing advanced training to learn what’s possible in OCHIN Epic, engaging them in their local EHR governance, and enabling unique system access, we are able to help our members deliver innovative solutions that not only help them, but also often benefit others in the network.”
As part of a two-phase analysis to assess the effectiveness and impact of the programs, a survey was sent to more than 230 participants, also known as builders, across more than 114 OCHIN members in rural and medically underserved communities. An analysis of the responses received indicated that overall satisfaction with the programs is high:
- 92% said that their participation contributed to improvements in their organization.
- 73% indicated that their participation has decreased their levels of burnout.
- OCHIN Epic users in member locations participating in the programs rate higher satisfaction with OCHIN Epic.
To address the wide range of improvement opportunities, the programs empower providers and other clinical staff through two separate tracks: Provider Builder and Clinical Content Builder. These tracks enable representation across roles and specialties.
For example, one builder recently customized their Medicare Adult Wellness Visit Navigator to improve their Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) audit for reimbursement. Prior to participating in the program, they passed only 10% of their CMS audits—but following tool creation, training, and implementation, they passed 75% of audits. Accurate and sustainable reimbursement practices that meet all requirements are critical to members’ ability to provide high-quality, whole-patient care that improves the health of their communities
