OCHIN Welcomes the Promise of Full Interoperability
The health care industry is on the verge of full interoperability, as two major national health information exchange (HIE) frameworks, Carequality and CommonWell, announced their connection for bidirectional health data exchange. According to a recent article in EHR Intelligence, most electronic health record (EHR) vendors nationwide have now equipped their products to connect directly into the national HIE frameworks, and the connection between CommonWell and Carequality users exponentially increases interoperability between providers, regardless of the EHR system they’re using.
OCHIN has long been a proponent of interoperability and national exchange frameworks, and we applaud this connection. Clinics on OCHIN’s hosted Epic and NextGen systems have exchanged over 1 million patient records through Carequality, and this new level of unprecedented data exchange will allow providers across the spectrum of care to more seamlessly coordinate care, improve patient experience and outcomes, and decrease costs.
This is great news for the safety net patients OCHIN and our members support, who often have scattered health histories that make coordinated care extremely difficult. Interoperability of this magnitude enables high quality, integrated care with every provider a patient sees—whether physical, dental, or mental health—wherever they see them.
