A driving force for health equity

Highlights from NACHC CHI

In August, OCHIN sent a team of staff to Chicago, Illinois to the National Association of Community Health Centers’ (NACHC) 50th annual Community Health Institute (CHI). This year’s conference focused on “Leadership, Collaboration, Innovation: Shaping the Future of Health Center Delivery”.

OCHIN’s team engaged in NACHC committee meetings, the Health Center Controlled Network (HCCN) Task Force, various advisory board meetings, poster sessions, an exhibition booth at the expo, leading a learning session, as well as attending many education sessions. Engaging with OCHIN’s members and partners through NACHC CHI and EXPO is always an enjoyable time for OCHIN staff.

Key themes from this year’s conference resonated with OCHIN’s work and included:

  • Technology continues to progress exponentially, and this rate of change is unlike in the past

  • Virtual health is expanding access and flexibility, changing where and how care is delivered

  • Sustaining peoples’ well-being and providing care only in rare instances is the future of health care – empowered by radically interoperable data & open, secure platforms

  • The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is focusing on a data driven approach to the Health Center Program, including Quality and Performance, a continuum of success and new funding/payment models

Additionally, Jim Macrae, Associate Administrator of the Bureau of Primary Health Care, emphasized that “Leadership is not about telling people what to do. It’s about asking the right questions and working with you to figure out the right way to move forward”.

On Monday, August 19, 2019, OCHIN staff Dr. Erika Cottrell and Arielle Goranson hosted an afternoon session on Leveraging Data to Elevate Excellence. Roughly 50 people participated in a robust facilitated conversation about operational strategies and challenges health centers experience.

Leaving Chicago, having seen and heard from so many of our community health center members and partners, OCHIN’s team is excited to be back in action and ready to apply new learnings from the 2019 NACHC CHI and EXPO.
