Megan Sapp, DDS, was named to the Epic Dentistry Steering Board  in June. Dr. Sapp joins an elite advisory panel of ten dentists from across the Epic community who convene monthly to provide guidance on development of the Wisdom dental module of the Epic electronic health record.

Dr. Sapp practices general dentistry at the Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center near Portland, Oregon, a member of OCHIN’s nationwide collaborative of health clinics. In 2018, with the support of OCHIN, Sapp became the first dentist to complete OCHIN’s Epic provider builder program. In 2019, Dr. Sapp joined the OCHIN informatics team. She serves as an important resource, providing support to the many OCHIN collaborative members on Epic Wisdom or going live in the coming year.

Dr. Sapp earned her dental degree in 2008, at the University of North Carolina. Her training included international rotations in Honduras and Peru. She has a passion for community dentistry and serving those with limited access to care.

In 2010, she began practicing general dentistry at Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center, a federally qualified health center (FQHC) with strong historical connections to migrant and seasonal farmworker populations, and a mission to provide high quality, comprehensive, culturally appropriate primary health care to these and other communities facing barriers to health care in Yamhill and Washington counties. Since its founding in 1975, the clinic has evolved to serve a diverse patient community that speaks more than fifty languages.

The health care center supports six dental clinics and a fully integrated EHR with Epic Wisdom. Dr. Sapp has been involved in developing Happy Mouth Happy Body, a large-scale medical-dental integration project at Virginia Garcia focused on connecting dental and medical care for patients in high-risk categories such as children, pregnant women, and patients with uncontrolled diabetes.

She says, “Utilizing tools within Epic has been critical to improving care for these vulnerable patients,” and participation in OCHIN’s Epic Provider Builder Program, “facilitated more involvement with the Epic build as well as staff support and training, as a member of the local EHR team at Virginia Garcia.”

OCHIN congratulates Dr. Sapp as she continues to pioneer advances in the dental EHR and advocate for the unique EHR needs of FQHCs and community health centers. As the only representative on the steering board from this health care sector, she brings an important perspective to the table. Keep your eyes open for updates from Dr. Sapp on Epic Dentistry Steering Board developments pertinent to OCHIN members and the patients they serve.
